@Bukowski Basically, how you advise listening to Radiohead. Which I will do.
great jam. The 2nd Concerto went on the Voyager Golden Record along with Chuck Berry, those aliens love a bit of Johnny B Goode!
@LadyGulag Wow - I had no idea. I feel disproportionately thrilled about that! Brilliant old Bach.
yes he got 3 compositions on the Golden Record. More info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contents_of_the_Voyager_Golden_Record
@AJM played at my wedding:) Along w the score from A LIttle Romance & Les Choristes
@LadyGulag Wow again. Doubly disproportionately pleased.
@CSC How lovely! I think I'll want that played at mine - along with this, which was publicly played for the first time in a small venue in London on our first date nearly two years ago. Both that and the Bach get me so much I can hardly breathe. Wonderful. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2Aj5S3QT5s
@AlicejustMay If you ever plan to listen to the concertos at the place of their inception let me know, and I will see what can be arranged...
@AlicejustMay A 'calling card' space probe was being sent out to investigate the possibility of alien life, submissions were invited regarding what to include and someone suggested Bach. One of the committee members said; "that may sound like we are showing off."
@thisismymistake Really really? That's an amazing thought... and thank you. May very well hold you to that!
@Bukowski Marvellous. And on one hand, delightfully naive - what alien lifeform is going to be so similar to us they're going to have a full appreciation of Baroque music etc. I checked out the link @LadyGulag posted above, and love this quote that was part of what went into the 'calling card':
We cast this message into the cosmos ... Of the 200 billion stars in the Milky Way galaxy, some — perhaps many — may have inhabited planets and space faring civilizations. If one such civilization intercepts Voyager and can understand these recorded contents, here is our message: We are trying to survive our time so we may live into yours. We hope some day, having solved the problems we face, to join a community of Galactic Civilizations. This record represents our hope and our determination...
... and our goodwill in a vast and awesome universe.
"A vast and awesome universe". The word 'awesome' just got awesomely cool again for me there.
I love that message, so touching, it's like saying "look we're f**ked up and will probably wipe ourselves out but we made some fantastic tunes & we'd like to share them with you!"
@LadyGulag Love it - intergalactic jamming :)
@AlicejustMay I'm sorely tempted to do a Voyager Golden Record Jam or two or three...
@LadyGulag ...now there's a thought...
@AlicejustMay My next door neighbour says he is an alien; I'll lend him some Bach, see what he thinks. He also collects mirrors.
@Bukowski Doesn't call himself Prot and claim to come from K-Pax, does he? :)
@AlicejustMay He calls himself Dave and he has built a gallery (huge garden shed) in which to display his collection of mirrors, he invites me around from time to time for a viewing!
@AlicejustMay YoujustMay, and YoujustShould, and I hope YoujustWill...
with eyes closed wouldnt see/love that wondrous art work...stay open for a couple minutes....beautiful thx
@Bukowski That's hilarious. I hope you appear suitably impressed each time you witness a new addition!
JollyWelljustShall, makenomistakeaboutit @thisismymistake!
@lynn200 glad you like it :)
So dark and rainy here. Now everything's more beautiful with this masterpiece taking place in my house! I should be more "classical" sometimes. But I must admit I've needed time to really like Bach. I think he is like some author in litterature (Proust for example) there is A time for their art in your life, but you must find it by yourself, as if you must earn it, live something before you understand all the beauty in it - I hope I'm clear in my explanations :)
@AlicejustMay WOW!!! Holy Baroque Madness. What a first date. I just listened to Baroque music composed by Johann David Heinichen. Must have been a passionate evening. Way to go. Our first date was in Hyde park. Sans Baroque but we did have hummus and plenty of olives. Thanx for the link. And the first time played in London!! Daaaamn!!!!!
@MyBlueElephant I totally understand what you mean - eloquently put, my friend! We don't give ourselves enough time to stand back, contemplate, and appreciate complex creations. It's hard to find the time, in fact. Increasingly so these days. But it's a shame, because the rewards can be so rich. I'm usually dreadful for wanting instant gratification and wanting it YESTERDAY.
@CSC Yes, it was a pretty memorable evening, to describe it with traditional British understatement. Yours sounds just as lovely - hummus in Hyde Park, with olives! How long ago was that?
@AlicejustMay My pedigree is Brit/Franco but I'm born & raised L.A. so I'm a big spaz. Brit understatement always makes me buckle. I'm gutted I can't see that new Steve Coogan show where he plays the idiot indie broadcaster on Northern radio. --that first date was ye gads 8 years ago. I pursued her for 7 years and she finally relented.Totally worth it. What's your story fair lady?
@AlicejustMay My face contorts in rictus everytime I see a new addition to the collection. The latest is a 'Lion King' mirror in an Art Deco style. Awful, truly awful!
@CSC Wowo, what an exotic pedigree you have.Just wondering which Steve Coogan show you mean - the northern one is Saxondale (former roadie with anger management issues) and the radio one is Alan Partridge, which is set in Norwich (south east). There's been a newish series called Mid Morning Matters with Alan Partridge, but it's a shadow of the first two series - not something worth revisiting really. But the original ones are still stupendous. I can quote them - I know them that well.
@CSC Anyway. I love that you pursued your missus until "she relented"! I knew my chap for about four years just through work, via emails which gradually became more about friendship than work, and then the occasional phone call, and then we met very briefly when he came to Manchester to take part in a TV programme, and finally met for a date when we were in both on separate trips to London four months later. He knew about my Bach thing and booked the concert... the rest is history, as they say.
@Bukowski Sheer brilliance. It reminds me of the bizarre creations you could buy from the Franklin Mint (off-the-page ads in crap Sunday supplements) for commemorative plates etc which enabled you "to elevate the experience of gifting". You must remember them; things like plates depicting the lives of the saints as portrayed by cats (St Michael the Manx, St Peter the Persian and so forth) - all with deadly seriousness.
@Bukowski I used to work at an ad agency where finding the most truly awful Franklin Mint (or similar) ad became intensely competitive, and we had an entire wall dedicated to torn-out pages from the News of the World magazine with highlighter pen slashes over the worst excesses of language.
@AlicejustMay I'm quite new to TIMJ and I was a little surprised to see classical music on here but it was a gorgeous surprise. It really seems to take off around the 6 minute mark ( Baroque 'n' roll?) Seriously, can we have some more, please?
Welcome to TIMJ, @decarter! Glad you like my eternal jam. It's kicked in because I'm in the middle of moving and haven't had a chance to get online properly. It's a great site and the jammers are a lovely bunch - have fun!
Hope you're not trapped under a pile of half-emptied cardboard boxes.
Listening in the dark with #headphones @AlicejustMay — a real treat!
Hope that your move is going well. Would you be good enough to clear up; Queens Road (surely incorrect?), Queen's Road or Queens' Road? I miss you on TIMJ.
Oh, lovely @Bukowski! I miss you too. The move has been going well, though I have been less well, and we're having a major problem with getting broadband installed. Will be back on TIMJ with a vengeance ASAP. Meanwhile, there's no black and white answer - it depends on the Queens Road you're talking about. There will be different versions of it up and down the land, and essentially you need to use the spelling of the specific road you're referring to. But it's worth bearing in mind that...
...road and place names which start out with an apostrophe often lose it over time. Do hope all is well with you, my friend? Xx
@AlicejustMay Thank you for your clarification, I can now shred the Mr. Disgruntled letter to Wolverhampton City Council; pah, I was looking forward to a good whinge and moan coupled with a nice slice of pedantry. Still; I'm glad that your wisdom has prevailed before I make a complete tit of myself, again! I'm fine thanks. I have 15 Chinese students beginning a short course on philosophy starting on Tuesday and from what I've heard they are positively chomping at the bit to get to grips with....
@AlicejustMay Wittgenstein! I'm the person for that job; teaching Wittgenstein to 15 19 year old Chinese students during Easter; surely there is a Hallmark card for that! Hope everything is going well with you. Looking forward to having you back on TIMJ ASAP (see what I did there?). xx
Alice! how is the new place? Did the cats settle in? How are you? When are you coming back!!!!!!
@natyblooming Naty!!! We're settling in nicely, but getting online has been a nightmare! Still waiting for broadband, and using a patchy intermittent solution in the meantime. Hopefully everything will be back to normal in the next few days! Are you well? Are things good? xxxxxxxxxxxxx
Where are you @AlicejustMay? Surely your online issues aren't still ongoing? Hurry back, we miss you!
Hope all is well Alice. Missing you. x
@simonp and @KerryEJordan Hello, lovely people - thanks loads for your messages! It's a long story so I shan't bore you but in a nutshell I've had scant access to my computer because it's had to be used by our resident tech expert to patch a solution to the LACK OF BROADBAND THAT BASTARD BT HASN'T RESOLVED, GGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!! We need a new line connecting one telegraph pole to another and it's been over a month now with them saying everyday that it's going to be fixed....
I've got my pc back now, but it's been such a faff doing everything via my old iPad that lots of things fell by the wayside - plus I was in charge of the practical side of the move, so I've been dealing with that while J has been dealing with the technical side. Weird not staring at a screen most of the day. I miss you all! I must find something I want to jam and I intend to do it later when I've come back from the airport. Hope you're well, and thanks again - so lovely to hear from you. xxxxx
@AlicejustMay Stupid BT. Glad you're all well. ;-) x
@AlicejustMay oh I know how that goes. When we were connecting at our last place, BT failed to show twice and because they have a monopoly on the phone lines, you're screwed really. If it's any consolation, when they finally did show up (on the third attempt) the installer couldn't have been more helpful and said that they simply don't have enough engineers; hence the impossibility of getting a time out of them.
Chin up and hopefully you're still able to listen to some good stuff in your enforced Jam absence.
@AlicejustMay - I had the same problem. It took Virgin well over a month to attach a line in a property where they were already being used! Hope you're not too frazzled and look forward to seeing what you choose, but I'm sure other things are more pressing :)
@AlicejustMay this is good practice for any coming apocalypse. Maybe breakout the generator and beam to the satellites.....ham radio...helloooo...is this thing on..tap tap
Alice! I miss you!!!!!!!!
as @natyblooming said with extra shiny bells on
will there be just one more Jam from you Alice? Just one? Yes? Please!
@d0minic oh, my lovely Dom - yes! I'll do it right now... X
@USMC_SemperFi says he just had his heart broken by that same witch that bought me a new one that way my heart would be whole again while she got what she wanted out of me then once again throwing it into bits of dusty glass particals next to my grey goose and Kahulua and an empty half n half bottle to top it off
