Our next door-but-one neighbours between 1970-1977 were Brenda and Clive. Brenda taught me to play piano, whilst Clive sat in his armchair puffing on a pipe. Clive was an opinionated man, with a fondness for Picasso paintings and the German language. He was the spit of Ron Mael when he Brylcremed his hair with a side parting. However, on the days when he slicked it right back, he bore more of a resemblance to Hitler; made all the more poignant with a copy of Mein Kampf on his bookshelf.
