She was already propping up the otherwise vacant bar, nursing the dregs of a half pint of cider and waiting for somebody or something. Fifteen years worth of femme fatale - Marlene Dietrich in hippy chic. She smiled as I walked towards the gleaming mirror under which Bob the barman stood, and I ordered a pint. So, I joined her - how are you - we were both fine - what are you doing - school is a drag - her boyfriend was getting her down - uh oh.
She and her friends were the keenest local talent around and their boyfriends, all about 4 years older than them and us, were the coolest guys in the scene. I shifted the conversation to the music I liked and bands that were about to visit our backwater town.
"I only drop my knickers to Van Morrison" she said. Bob moved to our end of the bar and began polishing the mirror furiously as she recounted the effect that Van's voice had on the squidgier parts of her anatomy. I missed my mouth, nose submerged and inhaled a good half pint of my beer, double-barrelled. Into the resultant maelstorm of foam and spray strode the boyfriend. "are you alright man?" he enquired with concern.
I love how each of your albums has its own memorable anecdote! As for the album,...Well, it's just my NUMBER ONE all time favourite album, with the track " Madame George" being my "eternal jam"...I think the album is an absolutely flawless masterpiece.....don't think I can say much more than that!!
...I've only ever had this album in vinyl & God knows how many times I've listened to it over the years. This is the first time I've ever heard it digitally and it's funny but I never realised that Van sang with a lisp before!....well, fancy that!

"Buy him a pint" she instructed so he did and out the door they then traipsed - she glancing back warmly.

Bob the barman placed my new drink down on the counter. "Do you want a straw with that? he asked.

It's probably in a similar position on my top albums of my teenage years list, and I was a teenager in the '90s!
