Yeh, I read about this trauma he suffered in his biography......Robert Quine sounded like a natural guitarist for The Velvet Underground!

Richard Hell's autobio "I Dreamed I Was A Very Clean Tramp" has a loving portrait of the obsessive, dyspeptic Quine and is well worth the read.
