Is it sacrilege to say I prefer the first half of The Beatles (1963-1966) than the second half (1967-1970)?

@LadyGulag No sacrilege! There's a good reason ... fresher, more energetic, less polished ... not that there's anything wrong with the Beatles in their last three years ....

@Swampy oh no nothing wrong at all. For me, there is an incredible dynamic between them in the first half which due to the restrictions they faced produced some of the greatest music of all time. With Epstein's death and their growing creative differences the second half still has some genius moments but lacks the consistency and focus.

@Swampy @LadyGulag Yes, I'd agree with you, they're definitely more of a unit/band in the early days, like you said, more fresher, energetic, plus they were touring then.

@HaveACuppaTea @Swampy yes they grew together, but then carried on by growing apart. a quick look at their faces on the cover of 'Revolver' to the ones on 'Let It Be' tells you that in an instant.

@LadyGulag Yep, mind you, talking about albums, my favourite in the 63-66 period has always been Rubber Soul.

This is one of my favourite Beatles covers. Great choice.

@LadyGulag @Swampy @HaveACuppaTea I always used to prefer the later period but as I've got older I've come to much prefer the earlier stuff. I listen to the Beatles all day at work (I work in a Beatles exhibition in Liverpool) and believe me when you hear their music all day the earlier albums like Hrad Days Night and With The Beatles, and even Please Please Me retain a shine that Let It Be and Abbey Road don't. In fact Hard Days Night has become my favourite Beatles album. Just flawless.

@BrownusPantius Yeah, I found that also when I got older I appreciated their earlier material more, I really like Please Please Me it has a certain charm to it, though there's still no mistaking the quality of their later work.
