In a documentary about synth pop recently, someone from the Human League described how it dawned on them that Gary Numan was just as much a synth pioneer as they were. And a pop star. They wanted to be pop stars too so they formed Heaven17. Really funny.
@lucathequietone Absolutely. Phillip K Dick is sensational, There's a book of his called 'A Maze Of Death' that I love. And 'The Man In The High Castle' used to seem like a prophecy. Can't read 'Valis' though it starts to have a strange effect!
@simonp I think it was Phil Oakey (sp?) who took the band and scarpered! That part made my least loved track ever. It isn't even in tune. IMO, obviously :)
Great Jam! glad to see the #BookJam baton is being passed around. I also love PKD, my top 5 of his are 'VALIS', 'The Three Stigmata Of Palmer Eldritch' and 'Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep', 'Confessions Of A Crap Artist' and 'A Scanner Darkly'. Have got 'We Can Build You' sitting on my shelf waiting to be read too. :-)))
@d0minic I don't know who started it. I stole it from @kddaniel who has a great one. Glad you managed Valis without starting to go mad. Wasn't it semi-autobiographical? Love 'Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep', especially the religious figure always pushing the boulder up the hill, if I've got the right book. Ridley Scott didn't read it before he made 'Blade Runner'. Would love to read 'Flow My Tears The Policeman Said' and 'Puttering About In A Small Land'!! :)
@alisonsghost yes it was. I'd recommend you read 'I am alive and you are dead' a biography of PKD that gives more insight into what happened to him, the drugs, his mental breakdown, the 'divine invasion' of his mind which 'VALIS'. 'Radio Free Albemuth', 'The Divine Invasion' and 'The Transmigration Of Timothy Archer' grew out of.
@d0minic Will do that with pleasure.I'm not sure how many are still in print, but I'll track them down. Do you remember the author of the biography by any chance?
@d0minic Thanks for the link and the suggestions. I gave my brother a lot of PKD books as presents when we had a sort of communal library. Now I live nearby again I'll go and make him find them:)

I like Gary Numan. I love Philip K. Dick.

@alisonsghost And ironically, those they left behind in Human League went onto to become far bigger pop stars

@alisonsghost well, that's just the kind of reaction I'd expect from someone who was working as a waitress in a cocktail bar

@simonp It toughens you up, I'm afraid. But the tips are good.

nearly forgot 'UBIK' the first PKD I read when I was 14 and the one that got me hooked on him for life!

@d0minic @alisonsghost Have you all seen this story about PKD? It could have been written by him: http://www.theguardian.com/books/2012/mar/27/losing-head-philip-k-dick-david-dufty-review

@kddaniel very mysterious.... will have to investigate further.
