Ænima (Full Album) by Tool

“My Top 10 Albums of All-Time ~ 8. Tool - Ænima (1996) ~ Now this may seem a little out of left field, especially after the likes of Can, but Tool, particularly what they did on this record, deserve all the credit in the world for a vision and an aesthetic that, however subtly, changed the emotional landscape and the intellectual boundaries of metal, alternative and mainstream rock in one fell swoop. Tool's musical vocabulary consists primarily of contrasting juxtapositions: distorted guitars, a dominant low-end, and technical, almost tribal rhythms, all laid out as a backdrop for Maynard's darkly emotive crooning, the intellectual, abstract-yet-universal lyrical themes and a refreshing dose of empathetic humanism. Tool is known for defying genre, but here is not only where they laid out their blueprint, it's also a fully realized vision unto itself -- their finest hour. The way we talk about bands like Velvet Underground/Pixies spurring countless copycats applies to Tool as well.”
