Led Zeppelin’s musical influences are the subject of @MOJOmagazine’s August 2004 covermount, and as one would guess it’s loaded with blues numbers. That’s not all, though—there’s a handful of instrumental acoustic guitar workouts, some soulful R&B;, a Joan Baez number that will remind some of Sandy Denny’s guest vocal on Zep’s fourth LP, and then there’s this haunting, wordless take on the George Gershwin classic “Summertime.” Brooklyn duo Santo & Johnny is best known for their #1 U.S. hit “Sleep Walk”; both that smash and the song I present here are from the duo’s 1959 debut LP on indie label Canadian-American Records.
