Blinkin' flip mate. Firstly...thank you! I'm really rather touched by that wee dedication. That's the second time I've been called nice, today. That's...let's see...twice now in one lifetime. Surely medal/award territory!! I haven't heard that brilliant, brilliant track before and it made me feel like greetin'...soppy old sod. What is it wi' us Weegies?!? We get rained on forever, but we love our city of birth. Well, weather...it's so overrated...Cheers Dave...whit a boy... ;-D
@daved@21schizoid ...Only ever been to Glasgow once & that was in the early 70s with my dad. ...A "tiny" bit different to how it is now haha! "Uncompromisingly rough" was one description I heard from my brother-in-law but I actually took a liking to the place! A hidden charm was felt by me while I was there
Thanks for the shout @daved, chuffed to be mentioned. Dean Owens certainly trips my mellow meter (mell-o-meter?) Beautiful sentiment, beautiful song — loved mention of “Elvis Costello / & the Attractions / playing Pump It Up.” Never thought that particular string of words would work their way, so well, into a song.
@debutch Yep DC, Glasgow has/had a reputation and like many, if not all cities, has had some dark moments. Although I live only 40 minutes away, I'm there often and every time I go, I get that Glesga' buzz...love it... :-D
@Sid_Bonkers Thanks Sid, appreciate the comment. I always found it a surprise to have "feelings" about the old place. Occasionally when I've been away, but moreso upon arrival back - whenever I land back on Glasgow turf, rail station or airport or whatever - it's unmistakably different, uniquely Glaswegian, the smells, sights, sounds... and a mile away from anything "Scottish". Hard to put into words, maybe that's the reason for songs... :)
@debutch Ah - pffft - Glasgow was once the second city of the Empire - meaning the second biggest city on the planet, so it's only natural that it should have had the second biggest gangland population too. But those days have long gone - everyone was evicted to new towns, high rise skyscrapers and schemes in the surrounding shires, and the city regenerated. It's still big and sprawling, but sparsely populated, and trouble is only in small & particular areas nowadays. you wouldn't recognise it!
@daved@21schizoid Yeh, there are striking memories that I have of the place in the 70s & I did kinda feel at home there no matter what people said about the place. I've been to Scotland about 10 times, mostly as a youngster with my dad , going on week-end excursions from London mainly to the isles. Last visit was the Edinburgh Festival 4 years ago but I'd love to visit Glasgow again.....
