Late 80s & REMs' "Green" Lp had been released to great acclaim. REM had 'arrived' now & were the darlings of the indie scene with their music regularly heard on student radio stations. However, the best was yet to come. Unable to squeeze their latest recording, "Down by the water" onto their album, it was released as a single & it immediately became an all-time favourite heard blasting from every dorm in the western world.
Now that's a cruckin' facker DC! Bought that album on its' release, purely on the strength of this track. Haven't heard it in quite some time. Early REMist for sure and even better for it...
Ka-ching!!!!! Am I right in remembering Peter Buck played on, or produced, (or something) on this album ? Which would help to square your circle!!! It's a great album anyway :-)
Great tune - love the Decemberists -I'm old school so I love Wilco, whoto me is modern,so they remind me of a combo of great 60 -70 bands - I could list them but how boring - they are a great band:) Love the Dylan mouth piece harmonica:) That's hard to do, fyi:)
@lesakramer5 I'm amazed at how few music lovers in the UK here even know about the Decemberists. I saw them live in London in February and they were incredible. They also have a magnificent back-catalogue too!
Thanks Dave - Yes I did miss it, I'll catch up with your first "what if" track later. I'm struggling to keep up with jams at the mo.
Had a look at "King is Dead" CD cover and indeed Buck plays guitar on this track, mando on "Don't Carry It All" and guitar on "Calamity Song". So maybe no surprise there's a strong REM influence on the album :-)

...and what made it the greatest single of the 80s was its' equally fabulous flip-side here ..https://youtu.be/ni7T18UUBUI?list=RDni7T18UUBUI

New to me and loved it, the REM influence is unashamed and obvious and of no consequence to me at least.
philipnareike
Interesting, their sound is very REM-like... I was expecting a Stipe-Sound-a-like too...I don't know this bandat all really
BertrandRustles

@kompani101 @boozybluesy @BertrandRustles @philipnareike @Sid_Bonkers @daved @shiningsun2k Delighted you all enjoyed this. I'm trying to be careful not to confuse listeners TOO much with my 'fantasy' intros with this "What if" series! Hope you enjoy the upcoming ones too!!
debutch
@SheRa That's the sad truth, isn't it? I think we may be saying that about a few more in my series coming up!
debutch
@TessParker Really happy that you seemed to enjoy it that much Tess! :-)

Could have been a REM b- side. As REM are no more ill take this pastiche
debutch
@mikelowe Hey Mike. I think you missed my 1st 'what if' jam , which is a pity...an authentic 'soundalike' of John Lennon...
debutch
@cscefc oh, definitely an "A" side, I think! :-)

@mikelowe ha! that's OK Mike. Take your time! Yeh, it's surprising that this album & indeed this band, aren't bigger in the UK than what they are.
mariellabg
Love them!
debutch
@mariellabg Pleased to hear that! :-)
