@aHandfulOfRain Well, My opinion is that KCs' first 2 albums haven't aged that well but KC the 'band' have. I put that down to the work that they produced in the early/mid 70s up to "Red" which all sounds fresh & dynamic today & then the shift in style that they made in the 80s, showingv that they were wlling to move with the times and also, Fripps' work with Bowie & Eno. Their music is still sought after on a decent degree by todays' young fans.
@21schizoid I only think that "ITCOTCK" hasn't aged well ( and "In the wake of Poseidon" too) because of the instrumentation & style that was used which was 'very much of its' time'.I think that the idea of 'ageing/being dated' is an interesting one. We all automatically think that if something is dated, then its' a bad thing but I don't necessarily think that that is so. To me, it just means typical of its' time and is no different to baroque music being enjoyed in the 19th century......
@21schizoid ....or trad jazz which was played a lot in the 50s'. SO, in my mind, "dated" in musical terms is not a derogatory thing and it doesn't really matter at the end of the day to broad-minded music -lovers anyway, does it? .....You're right about their live back-catalogue releases keeping the KC fire burning. I've got the 4CD set "The great deceiver" from their greatest period (imo) '73-'74 ( "Larks'tongues', 'bible black ' & 'red') & also, "live at Marquee '71 2CD"...so much out there
@ssrock "What is Prog"? What a good question! I definitely need @21schzoid here to help me answer that!! I think its' origin is in the UK, around 1969, reaching its' peak over the next few following years until Punk came along & took some of its' appeal away for many. THe bands?...the early work of Yes, Genesis, Emerson , Lake & Palmer, King Crimson ( of course), Van der Graaf Generator, Jethro Tull are all some of the names you can stick the 'prog' label on....
@ssrock ...I would 'basically' define prog as quasi-classical music. Difficult & elaborate time-siganatures & changes of pace & dynamics making it a 'demanding' listen. Some of it was brilliant, some of it was pretentious shit where bands seemed to be playing 'complicated' music just for the sake of it but prog in its' hey-day seemed to be very much a British thing which the States were slow to warm to.....The 'Moodies'? Not 'strictly' prog but were labelled because they had'cineramic sound'
@debutch@ssrock Good stuff chaps. DC as always, rises to the challenge magnificently. I believe you have put that 'debate' to the sword! @ssrock What is early prog...anything listened to before 5am...I was going to go on, but I only wanted to start a fight and DC changed the Jam... ;-D
@21schizoid@debutch Thank you both. Do was I right in thinking The Moody Blues' Nights In White Satin qualifies then? Also, I couldn't agree more with your assessment of the "dated" concept, Dave. Well said.
@lawrence35523 hmm, I think we'll have to agree to disagree. By 'dated' , I just mean that I think they ( 1st 2 albums) could never pass as contemporary music.....I still love them and play them though.
And I finally got around to listening to your new jam. Very nice. I've known of Nick Drake and remember hearing a song or two I've liked by him, but the listenings have been few and far enough between that I couldn't name a single song. With the exception of "Hazey Jane" for the time being. :)
@lawrence35523 ....("or better still, don't")... hehe! I like that! ...... Aw c'mon Steve. You know what I mean,....... I'm not saying that they HAVE to sound contemporary because ( as you say correctly) contemporary sounding isn't necessarily a good thing anyway just as I say "dated" doesn't have to be a bad thing........Some may say (understandably) that I'm being contradictive but it's just my own way of defining those terms.....
@shiningsun2k The remainder of Drakes' music is pretty similar to this. Mellow & easy on the ear but also delightfully acoustic/jazz-like. If you like this, then another that springs to mind that you might like is John Martyn.
Oh yeah! I think I mentioned a guy your age who worked at the gym I went to for several years before it closed who I hit it off with talking about music. He was very passionate about classic jazz and music in general and would write poems about it while on road trips. Anyway, one of the artists he recommended to me earlier this year was John Martyn, who I ended up liking quite a bit. So good call and thanks for the reminder about him. :)
This was really good...I had just watched a show "Anthony Bourdain Parts unknown" Hehad visited a commune named Christiana in Denmark,no cars are allowed (everyone road bikes) No hard drugs - but you can get weed, hash & the like...they foraged & made dishes that featured wild herbs & flowers...He asked one of the hosts if he were a hippie, the guy thought a moment and said "I guess I am" Everyone was smiling & they all seemed so happy and free.. I wonder if I am too brainwashed for such a life
@SheRa Nah, I reckon anyone could get involved in something like that if they really wanted it. ...Are you thinking about it, then? ...Let's organize the first TIMJ commune!! :D
@debutch Sigh - Tears of Joy - been so busy this week..but know I own EVERY song he did - he is a hero to me - I'm so in love with Nick Drake...long before VW used hiss music - - grrr:) - think we talked about this in the past - I Love Nick Drake by Robyn Hitchcock - just to keep the love going, is another great tune - tried to find it - it exists, but, couldn't find - I know it's out there but wanted to post a big thank you! Oh remind me to tell you my Robyn Hitchcock story:)
@Sid_Bonkers@debutch Just shows how much Nick was loved by all - Music genius's always seem to die young - sigh:) But, he made a lot of amazing music:) I love Nick Drake - and everyone else should too...
@debutch how did I miss Jeff Airplane? I grew up right above Grace - she had the only pool in Bolinas and used to open up her auto gates and let us little rug rats swim in her pool, the only pool in town - that is my FAV song from that album! So sweet and romantic! Do I have great stories about living above the Airplane house in Cali:) It was the wild west in the '70's - LOL:)
@lesakramer5 You lived above Grace Slick??? She let you swim in her pool??? I MUST hear some more of your tales! wow......was this 'Haight Ashbury' or something? ( I don't know Cali at ALL btw :-) )
What a beautiful track, debutch. Bryter Later is one of my all time fave albums. I can still put it on and be instantly moved and uplifted. "Northern Sky" was my introduction to Nick back in the mid eighties. So sad he didn't get the recognition he deserved in his short life, but heartening that successive generations have discovered, loved and in many instances influenced by his truly wonderful music.
@melissapulo That's right Mel. I've been listening to Drake since he was actually alive and if anything, I enjoy his music even more today. I was always find it difficult trying to describe the appeal of his music to newcomers

@21schizoid @aHandfulOfRain @ssrock @garyprice265 @redheadx Sorry guys, I changed jams without answering you all. How rude of me! I shall correct that (below) on this new jam page....
debutch
@redheadx Yes, It ("Moonchild") is beautiful. It just shows you the different sides of KC and what they were capable of.
debutch
@garyprice265 I like the Doves'version a LOT more now that I learned that they credited KC! :-)

@shiningsun2k Thank you! Yes, I suppose The Moody Blues' "satin" could qualify....on the grounds of being 'grand' & 'symphonic' sounding....
debutch
@ada23 Thank you :-)
lawrence35523
Why should they have to sound contemporary?..if you want that you could always listen to mumford and sons...or better still..dont!
shiningsun2k
Yes! You seem somewhat reluctant, but I'll take it! haha the things you mentioned are exactly what I was thinking of though.
