sorry to all the Zeppelin haters out there but Stairway to Heaven was obviously so much more than the 4 bars of Taurus that may have got it going

Very recognizable, but I'm not surprised ;)

Led Zeppelin are very well known for 're-purposing' other peoples work and not acknowledging the source material. Great jam. Lovely.

@kompani101 When accused of "re-purposing" Russian folk songs for The Rite of Spring, Igor Stravinsky said "Good artists borrow, great artists steal."

@mlong3rdfl I was trying to avoid 'borrow' or 'steal', in regard of the above quote, but I think in this case it would have to be steal. :)

Wow, beautiful song. I've known OF Spirit, but haven't listened to them until now. Saving this album for tomorrow's listening at work.

@mlong3rdfl - or looking at it another way: "Originality is nothing but judicious imitation" (Voltaire)

And I just now noticed I missed something after the cut on my home page. Yeah, definitely lifted that riff, but at least it's not they did create their own song around it (as far as I know).

@paulgdaly Yep, I saw it. Remember, you read it first here on TIMJ. :)

@dutchbeeblebrox Maybe Spirit saw your post yesterday and decided to sue. Jimmy Page will undoubtedly conjure up the Goat of Mendes and unleash him on you.

@paulgdaly Oh dear, what have I done...

@doublefunk :) "Imitation is the highest form of flattery" (but do acknowledge where it's coming from...)

It is such a lovely tune and how popular would Stairway have been without the lift?Spirit were a good band who didn't get the breaks their talent deserved.

6 years, 8 months ago

tpjdavies

Cheap Trick also shamelessly 'borrowed' from 'It's Nature's Way'.

6 years, 8 months ago

dutchbeeblebrox

@tpjdavies Cheap Trick, true to their name...

tpjdavies

Very true always.Track called 'The Flame'.

Regardless of the Led Zeppelin controversy, everyone should delve deeper into Sprit. They were one of the most under-recognized bands of the 60s - 70s. Especially salient today is "Nature's Way." I love this band and Jay Ferguson's follow project Jo Jo Gunne

My biggest question is why would someone wait so long to bother suing over this?

6 years, 8 months ago

CSC

@rumn8tr Its incredibly expensive to bring an intellectual property suit. At least $100K to begin. My company was infringed on youtube by a French individual for over $1.2 million. French court is the most expensive in the world. We can't afford to sue at this point. Randy California was reportedly singing for food in an Indian restaurant at the end of his life. His family just wants him to receive writing credit on the Zepp reissue.
