Space Dandy is, thus far, the best anime series of 2014. The comedy Shinichiro Watanabe brings to the table is gutbustingly self aware, a trait that the artform hasn't had for quite some time. However, works of greatness are not produced by one element alone. Such rarities come once a decade. To support the comedy, the music of Space Dandy is a eclectic treasure trove of nearly forty contributors, from the ever talented Yoko Kanno to the pulse-pounding DJ Taku Takahashi. It's Yasuyuki Okamura with his performance of the main theme "Viva Namida" that steals the show. The dude is 48, hasn't released a single in six years, and is still rubbing it with the young guns? That is just ridiculous. While the track is solid J-Pop goodness, it's Okamura's vocals that slam you. Modulating from minor to major key in mid measure, whipping grunts like Rob Parissi of yore, and funkily dancing like he's going to rocket to the stars. That is what I call a jam.
