1965 girl pop!   3

A covermount like the one from @MOJOmagazine's May 2011 issue featuring "The Roots of the Ramones" should be electrifying, but it manages to be a real stiff. It's not for lack of great acts; everyone from T. Rex to New York Dolls to Love, Suicide, & Television is represented, but the problem is that many groups are represented by mediocre live versions of excellent songs, or baffling misses like, say, the terrible cash-in attempt "Bird Dance Beat" by the Trashmen instead of the home run of "Surfin' Bird." Then there are the total flops like Ronnie Spector's 1999 Joey Ramone-penned "She Talks to Rainbows." Jayne County takes a great stab at satirizing the whole Max's Kansas City scene in which the Ramones flourished, with a song named for the famous club, but it wears out its welcome at an unnecessary 7 minutes. While it's no "Leader of the Pack" this 1964 tune by the Shangri-Las is more palatable than most of the disc. I love the spoken bits.   2
