@J_Dub Quite so! Loving the new QOTSA album too. Still not sure if I'm ready to forgive Beck for becoming a Scientologist twat. ;-)

I can never forgive Beck for that, much as I love nearly everything he's ever made. But he's second generation, so he didn't make the decision as a sentient adult, which is what I keep trying to convince myself is what makes all the difference. Hmm. Love this, though. Not heard all of the QOTSA album, but this is what I made of 'I Appear Missing': http://www.davidsvideozoo.com/SearchResults.asp?BrandID=6456 if you fancy a look. Love this track. Trent's a talented chap.

@AlicejustMay Just rolled home. Great words missus - makes total sense to me. Indoctrination can be tantamount to abuse. What is your fave album of the year?

jonnyneale5

@AlicejustMay BTW did you catch my track from earlier? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cYCubol7a0

@AlicejustMay AJM, your typos are better than most people's sentences. But yes, if reading tomorrow; The clip in question has one purpose: to bring a big smile. It works for me every time.

Aaahhhh! Cutie! Lovely clip - thank you. As for me; feel suspiciously ok at the mo. However, I have a sneaky feeling that's because my hangover is smarter than I am and is simply having a lie in: no doubt it will get up to join me later on. Fave album of the year so far... ask me on the 10th when I've heard Tomorrow's Harvest, as I think that's going to be the one. Missed the live streaming event the other day as too many people tried to do the same. What about you?

@AlicejustMay My pleasure. Technically I did owe you one cute child by the laws of yin and yang. Just as you owed me one drunken message. Even if yours was less worrying! :-) I'm strange enough to quite often enjoy hangovers - the sensitivity to sound makes the walk to work rather thrilling. Sometimes I have to walk past the door so the song can finish. It's not really a choice. Right - hang on, need a moment.

"the walk to work" ...renegade chemist... I have a sudden vision of you filling prescriptions at Boots while hungover; thinking casually: the one I just sent out - did I put diamorphine in that instead of Disprin? Ah well, they'll get a nice surprise if I did. :)

@AlicejustMay Alice - you just freaked me a lot. 'Renegade Chemist' is one of nicknames!

Fave album 'so far' - nice trick there - ask me later! Pfft. I think QOTSA. The National could not follow High Violet, which I think is perfectly acceptable as it was,for me, a perfect realisation - the sound of a band arriving late, but immaculately formed. Like the cat-bus in Totoro. Yer Daft Punk has some genuine highlights. Like you I'm waiting on an album - new 65DOS. I was delighted you liked that Rolo remix>>>

Are you familiar with them? Or rather have you seen them live? 65Daysofstatic that is. I'm almost hoping no so I can recommend them with a full spectrum of enthusiasm. The best live band I have ever seen.

AlicejustMay

'Renegade Chemist' is directly under your jam name... hence my image of you rummaging around among the shelves of prescription-only packets and bottles with a hip flask in your white jacket. I know; my answer feels like a cop-out - but I think, knowing me as I do, that it'll be BoC all the way. I'm a bit ambivalent about The National; haven't summoned up the wherewithal to listen to DP until the fuss has died down a bit (I'm a hypocrite - there's lots of fuss for BoC too)...

Ah - you've posted while I was writing. I shall add more, as intended...

...but extremely interested in finding out more about 65DoS - especially having read your last comment. Never heard of them before, and loved that track; not aware of any album - when's it out? I already feel a little frisson of excitement at the prospect that this is something new and excellent. Oh, and I think that had I heard all of QOTSA I may well have chosen it myself (what a copycat) because when on form they're pretty damn special. But I haven't yet. And now I have to go to the vet's.

Dammit. You're not spookily prescient. BoC are SO underrated. The National are OK, but I think High Violet (album) is extraordinary. Maybe you've given it a go but, if you have not, I suggest 4-5 listens. It took over my entire house (4 different people, 4 different tastes, all hooked like aural heroin). 65DOS> A considered introduction will follow.

OK. So basically they are like Mogwai but pushing the envelope of WALL OF GUITARS as far as it will go. I cannot explain how much fractured-energy, quiet LOUD, total commitment they pour int what they do and so the albums - though excellent can never approximate the experience of seeing them tear it up. They played 176 gigs across Europe last year - I think that larger picture informs who they are in the microcosm of the hour or two you share with them>>>

I could wax lyrical all day but in album terms I suggest you start with the last one - it's more accessible and Robert Smith sings in the middle (he is a HUGE fan). So - http://drownedinsound.com/releases/15322/reviews/4139785 Crash Tactics, Tiger Girl A taste of them live - this is what Chime is to Orbital. Always the last track. I'm always near tears and jumping like mad. Again you have to see them live to really get it... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qSptlkMuC8

Wow. Have decided to purchase the last one on the strength of the clips and the review, especially as it makes a favourable comparison with Ulrich Schnauss, who has made some gorgeous music. My turn to ask you again now: do you know his stuff? A Strangely Isolated Place is an utterly beautiful album (although I would have dropped 'strangely' from the title, but that's me being a pedant).

Retreat Retreat? Fall Of Math? Other answers to follow.

I'm changing Jam for something deeply 'childhood nostalgic'. I'd be most happy to continue conversation about mister Ulrich and his marvellous Schnauss. Or I can come to your gaff. Whats new for you?
