***John Kongos wrote this as a protest song against white man's appropriation of native territory in Africa. It was built around a riff lifted from an African tribal dance recorded in a jungle...........
...... and it is cited by the Guinness Book of Records as the first ever sample used on a record***
Just wonderful. I was a huge Mondays fan (still am actually) back in the day and I remember finding out Step On was a cover but having no way in those pre-internet days of hearing the original. Just not a record that's easily found. It was a good few years later that I did eventually hear it and it blew me away then just as it does hearing it again now. The Mondays covered another Kongos track called 'Tokoloshe Man' (I think) on their 'Live' album, both versions are - again - great.
@Brownpants I might spend some time looking into this guy. He had two hits this & Tokoloshe Man, I know he realised a few others, so I'd be interested to know if he went off in a different direction or what, but he's certainly a talent.
On the other matter sometimes I think waiting (sometimes years?) to hear a song, had a certain value, that's probably just the reactionary in me:)
