A kiss-of-life for Ian Hunter and the rest of the Mott the Hoople crew, just in time. David Bowie, who had previously made the acquaintance of Pete Overend-Watts, their guitarist, heard from him that they were struggling to make a go of the band.
Seeing that they were in desperate need of a winning composition, and knowing that they were probably about to split, having had a decent go at chart success but under-achieving, he gifted them this song, after first having "Suffragette City" rejected by Hunter. It would increase their longevity by years, reaching number 3 in the UK and number 37 in the USA. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_the_Young_Dudes_%28album%29
@HaveACuppaTea Unusually, I thought David's version was rather tame compared to Hunter's (there's a one-off for you!). Yes, 'bow' as in "bow-tie", not 'bow' as in "take a bow" or "when the bough breaks". Totally agree on that last point. And so many in the media seem convinced it's an "either/or" - that it doesn't matter. Well - if anyone called me Mr Jones-son, or somethinglike that, they'd soon learn the correct way to say it!!!! (I've even heard it pronounced "David Booey" !!!!!)
@leejohnson Haha, David Booey! You would think these so called experts would've done some research. Getting back to the song, yeah I agree with you, but I do like Bowie's (as in bow-tie) version as well.
@hsmagnet Yes old chap! England say "dyudes", USA says "doods". Am I right or am I right? @HaveACuppaTea Yes, many years ago now. For football fans (soccer), I will never forget Mick Channon, ex-Southampton player, calling Gary Lineker "Gary Line-Acre". Honestly!

Do you prefer Bowie's version? I hate people that pronounce Bowie as in Bow-ie, it's Bowie as in the Bowie knife, sorry had to get that off my chest.

@leejohnson Yeah, but you've got to forgive him, he's from the West Country, this clip is a bit of a send up of that - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xLuaqNoxjro

@leejohnson I just heard the versionof this tune by Contraband. They were a sort-of-supergroup,mostly because of Michael Schenker.Worth a listen.
