The 'grandads of punk' - and that was actually in the late 70s when it was all happening! Older than your average 'young bucks', their sound certainly epitomised the period. But it's doubtful whether they could truly have been considered in the same light as, for instance, the 'Sex Pistols' - "young, angry, and anti-establishment; no future, and no respect". They knew where bandwagons were, and found the ideal one to climb onto.
Take a look at the facts: Jet Black, drummer - 39 years old at the time; Dave Greenfield, keyboards - 28 years old; Hugh Cornwell, vocals & lead guitar - 28 years old; and Jean-Jacques Burnel, bass - a mere 25 years old! That's not to say that this was not a great record, nor that they were, in general, rubbish at what they did. I would not have bought their "No More Heroes" album if I had thought that. But they did leave themselves open to ridicule. I know - I defended them often enough.

This was from the album mentioned, and got to No. 9 in the UK in 1977 (no US release). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_More_Heroes_%28album%29
