The flipside of 'The Man'? He fooled me then! There I am, back in 1972, making my way through "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars" for the very first time, and a third person starts to tell me (I'm supposed to think) all about Ziggy - only, he's actually a she. Or is she? He? Hang on a minute. This is a false start. It's really a song about his (ex) friend, the 'National Elf' - Marc Bolan. As I find out later.

No, if I REALLY want to discover all there is to know about the perfumed alien himself, I have to leave the safety of the softer musical numbers which have lead me this far through the album, and traverse the raging "rockers" that are "Star" and "Hang On to Yourself", before I finally get to the biographical story of "Ziggy Stardust". For the time being, then, I absorb the majesty and bitter-sweet ballad that is 'The Lady'.

You say it is a song about Marc Bolan and then the lyrics make perfect sense, thanks for that, another lyrical mystery solved :)
