“'And when the car broke down they started walking /
Where were they going without ever knowing the way?'
This has been going through my head all week.
I always thought the song was about irresponsible young parents abandoning their children. But looking it up, I found that it's actually about a (real-life) elderly couple who never arrived at their family reunion. The band thought of them as going off to have fun and skipping the reunion. But later, they found that the couple had died -- their bodies were found at the bottom of a ravine.
Reading the lyrics now also gave me a bit of a chill because I knew someone once who parked his car at a national park and went for a walk on a very, very hot day. He did not make it back to his car. Some moments in this song bring that right back to me.”
