LIgeti definitely has an otherworldly sound in his pieces but they also display a real humanity and all the characteristics of someone who bore witness to the horrors of the 20th Century. His bother and father died in Concentration Camps and he fled Communist Hungary after the failed uprising in 1956. HIs music is full of tragedy and discord, yet also playful and humorous. The quintessential triumph over adversity.
In the book I'm reading at the moment a dude with a fetish for binding/control and who has a propensity to overuse flexive fingers for making quote marks always poses the question of whether he can tie people up to a Ligeti soundtrack

Also the composer of "Amospheres," featured in "2001: A Space Odyssey." Magnificent!
