Thanks! This Sacred Harp thing is similar but not quite the same as the style I'm trying to recall - which was very plain, unison singing, primitive, repetitive, almost hypnotic ... maybe I heard it on some old Alan Lomax recordings ... will jam it if I find it!

There's a term for that kind of hymnody where the congregation marks time with one hand and I cannot for the life of me remember it. Any clue?
