Another bit of trivia about Green that I love is that it was released on the same day as the 1988 presidential election. The album was advertised along with a voting reminder and quote from Stipe saying "Don't get Bushwhacked."
I most definitely remember that release date and that ad! It's odd you played this because I purchased their Unplugged Sessions (amazon had it for ten bucks). I actually played the set when it arrived at my door. The first disc ends with World Leader Pretend and I thought, does anyone actually remember that song? Turns out you do and I must say, I think this album version is actually damn good. I didn't recall the castanets or the pedal steel. I may have to listen to this album today.
@AheadByEcho I'm on a minor R.E.M. jag because of this reissue and I will definitely check out the Unplugged sale if it's still on. I had the same though about several songs on Green: Does anyone remember this song? I remembered some more than others and loved how good World Leader Pretend sounds to me. It's good to break through with this band, which doesn't happen very often for me anymore.
