Positively 4th Street by Bob Dylan

“Sad news of the passing of great producer Bob Johnston. He worked with amongst others Dylan, Cohen, S & G, etc. Famous quote of his, "All I did was turn the tapes on.” I had big problems tracking down a non-restricted version of this. I hope it plays for you. Otherwise go here for a nice, crisp recording:- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xc2yCWsR07U -  #FavouriteArtists  - #FavouriteDylanSong

Maybe more than anything other than “Like A Rolling Stone”, this is the song most dissected, pulled apart, chewed on and spat out into reams of exposition by the “Dylanologists”. (Dylanology is of course the greatest of the pseudo-sciences along with climate change denial, phrenology and astrology. Scientology is apparently, a “religion”.) Speculation was rife as to who this song is about - Phil Ochs, Joan Baez, Pete Seeger, Edie Sedgwick, Tom Paxton, the whole Greenwich Village folk set. I’ve always found this laughable. It seems obvious to me that’s it’s about Dylan’s old adversary Robert Zimmerman. Now Bob Dylan couldn’t have existed without Robert Zimmerman, but the converse is not true. Robert Zimmerman would have got on just fine without Bob Dylan. Zimmerman, after flunking out of University, goes back to Hibbing and works with his Dad at the family hardware store, taking over the business when the old man retires in 1974. I really hope no one writes a song like this about me. Or like 'Idiot Wind'. Thank you.

"I wish that for just one time, you could stand inside my shoes. You’d know what a drag it is to see you." One of the great rock put-downs. Love this.   9
