What I probably was listening to most this week...10 years ago. Brian Wilson finally caught Moby Dick, first performing the elusive Smile album live in its entirety as he'd envisioned it, then releasing his studio recording in 2004. "Surf's Up" still leaves me devastated all these years later as no other song can do, every time I hear it. No, I've never fully understood the lyric...and I don't have to. I just let the music wash over me. (Album released September 28, 2004)

Best of 2011: The 1967 Smile Sessions were released and included a solo outtake, which I cannot find online. This will have to do. I like the song and have heard it live twice now. It is a curious masterpiece.
This solo recording of 'Surf's Up' (1967), by the great Brian Wilson, is a part of the SMiLE SESSIONS. The Beach Boys' SMiLE SESSIONS are well known, but the Brian Wilson's (solo) SMiLE SESSIONS are may be even better ! Enjoy...
