Thought I'd go a little bit 70's this week, heard this somewhere the other day and it reminded me of being a kid, it was an amazing song when I was 8 years old, still sounds good.
A friend asks me what I'm listening to these days.
I say "all sorts!"
"What's on your iPod now?" he sighs.
"The Carpenters 20 Golden Greats".
"God", he says, "Do you ever do anything non-ironically?"
Um. What?
I don't listen to *anything* ironically. I listen to stuff because I like it. With this it's a mix of nostalgia, Karen's glorious vocal and the utterly batshit notion that a squeaky clean, utterly square, mom's apple pie all american brother/sister light entertainment combo can decide to do something as utterly mental as cover Klaatu's love and peace anthem. And then have the audacity to do it with such effortless style and wit. IT. IS. MAGNIFICENT! I've been listening to the Carpenters 'acapella' versions on youtube recently and marvelling at the richness of her voice. It is. a thing. of wonder. Maybe it's because I know she was an excellent drummer, but I always got the impression that given half a chance, she'd rock out like a mutha!
