Saw the great Cibo Matto in Boston last nite. Reunion/first new album in 15 years tour. Fantastic show. They played most of their forthcoming new album Hotel Valentine, plus several tracks from Viva! La Woman   1

"There is no sincerer love than the love of food," said George Bernard Shaw, and I'll admit, nothing else earns my full attention so easily. I love food. So do you. Cibo Matto are honest enough to dedicate their pop music to food, because didn't you know? Pop songs don't work best when written about varieties of lovers -- they work best when written about varieties of snacks. In fact, almost all top-40 hits that wax wantonly or cross stars might have saved themselves a lot of energy by simply being about potato chips, or steak tartare. Substitute the lyrics of any Katy Perry song with your grocery list. You'll find it invokes just as much passion, and without alienating conservative listeners, because food is something even grandma can get behind. Cibo Matto, a beat ahead in '96, wrote a concept album about food. Though the term "food for thought" has rarely, if ever, excited salivary glands, consuming the album at a pensive pace proves doubly satisfying.   9
