“With Jamie xx having just released his solo album (unfortunately said to be disappointing) I thought it a good time to revisit his wonderful remix album of Gil Scott-Heron's 'I'm New Here' - titled, 'We're New Here'. While many could consider a young person's dubstep touch insulting to Heron as a legendary jazz musician and poet I find those concerns misplaced as the album as a whole is tasteful, remaining unpredictable for its duration while using Heron's lyrics as a rhythmic foundation; and throughout the album it is often the case that said lyrics are delivered without compromising their pathos.
This track is perhaps the simplest on the album though, but I chose it anyway for the equally simple reason that it just sounds great and is readily accessible for those unfamiliar with the sounds of both artists. The pulsating texture cuts quite nicely and carries the essence one would usually associate with Burial - but clearly this is far more upbeat, and that's fine every now and then.”
