Kimbra always slays her ballads, and this one is no different. Lush and heartbreaking and vulnerable and romantic. Complex and simple at the same time. It took most of the year for this album to grow on me. Unlike her debut— Vows, which was an instant classic for me—I found Golden Echo to be less accessible. It's been a real treat to give it a dedicated listen this winter, and finally digest each track with the care it deserves. This is a record you have to let happen to you, not one you can be casual with. I'm happy I can finally declare it one of my favorites of 2014 with complete confidence. I've got a few favorite tracks on it, of course, but this is one of the stand-outs.
