"Surry" isn't really a word, according to most dictionaries. Laura Nyro intentionally spells it differently from the noun "surrey" which means a horse drawn carriage. Many assume they know what she meant, but when asked in interviews, Nyro was coy about it. We never got a straight answer from her. Many speculate, but no one really knows. It's left open to the listeners to decide for themselves. There's no right or wrong answer. If there was one, it died with her. Since watching the Marvel/Disney film Guardians of the Galaxy recently I've found myself a bit obsessed with the music adults were listening to when I was a child. Particularly, the late 60s and early 70s. If my research is correct, Laura Nyro was "pregnant" with her 2nd album titled "Eli and the Thirteenth Confession" (where Stone Soul Picnic was first released) about the same time my mother was pregnant with me, so this song could be my twin sister from another mother. We were both "released" at roughly the same time.   6
