This should equally appeal/horrify hardcore fans of either Warp Records or black metal specifically, and utterly fucking delight hardcore fans of music in general.
There's been a rise of subgenrelisation (likely a consequence of increased modern media consumption) in what would be headered in a music shop/spotify sorting algorithm as 'heavy metal', but maybe not to the degree that other genres have seen (compare with the number of genres arguably under the 'indie' or 'electronica' banners, for example). I think things like this, which conceivably could get sorted into the (nearly non-existent) genre of 'transcendental blackend life metal', show there is a complexity/concept that heavy metal has started to express since things like Sunn0))) started to correlate what could be considered 'art music' with the sense of extremity that heavy metal has traditionally pushed forward. The negative reaction that Liturgy gets from 'trve' metal fans is pretty reminiscent of the sort of ire that goes with the gamergate tag, another group struggling to deal with the maturing of 'their' medium (but being total unrepentant bastards about it).
