SuBarbiea + Teen Idle by Marina and The Diamonds

“Completely obsessed with this song right now. Gorgeous and weirdly dark for perfectly-made pop music. There's something very modern - and relatable for me - about the mourning of 'the wasted years, the wasted youth' spent holding oneself to a cruel and relentless moral standard built around a sort of directionless/omnidirectional existential guilt, never feeling good enough, not being able to engage with and appreciate the world at hand, instead despising that world - and ultimately oneself - as superficial, base, petty, unsophisticated- sinful. Communion w/ another human - as can take place, e.g., through music - is such a better and more fruitful way to spend time than agonizing over whether or not one can in good conscience affirm certain dogma (and what terrible moral implications might attend if not), which is what my understanding of religion was. Reminds me of Nietzsche: “There is not enough love and goodness in the world to permit giving any of it away to imaginary beings."”
