Frittering is a song I hear every day - it's part of my sleep-cycle playlist. Mercury Rev's debut album is lovely and odd but Frittering is the song that has a hold on my soul. I recall a music journalist of the time (1991) saying that it sounds like "A Pink Floyd song if Syd Barrett had still been in the band in 1973" and I can think of no better way to describe it. Soaring, soothing guitar gives the song an epic quality and the cryptic vocals (both in meaning and presentation) draw up a troubled story of loss and a weird kind of acceptance. It seems complicated and simple at once; I love it.
