“guys i tried so hard to resist doing a consecutive-artist deal here, but i have been obsessed with this song for like over a week now and my appreciation for it grows every day. i love what he does with the opening line of each verse or stanza or whateveritis, a tiny bit like mimi parker at times. just the other night was talking with R, wishing more people played with the interaction between music/sound and words/meaning, unfolding the two together like here, or say, letting them blossom and burst like in "i heard her call my name" or "taking people" or the wrens' "happy"...love.”

saw Richard Buckner last night, excellent performance but a little sad because the room was almost empty and he seemed disheartened by it. it's a little weird in that i saw him at the old hi-tone years ago and the place was pretty full (also, he played more of my favorites then but i think this was the better performance). the opening act was not at all shabby either. it was a little surreal, in this town of boring rock n' roll bluster and so much noisy appearance-based bullshit, to be able to listen to people like jose gonzalez and old cat power on the overhead in between sets too (i quite liked that). plus the intimacy reminded me a little of the best little warehouse shows i used to be able to go to any night of the week in pittsburgh. Buckner and that kind of thoughtful, genuinely sad songwriting brought back a flood of memories of wonderful people i used to know. i sat at a picnic table outside afterwards wondering where they all are now, if they're doing well.   2
