#copyright Number 5 Roy Orbison's Pretty Woman. 2 Live Crew went to court over this one. The group initially asked permission to use the sample and was denied - well they released the song anyway and headed to court. First the court sited fair use as the song was described as a parody of the original, when that was over turned there were two "official" stories the first being that they settled out of court for an undisclosed amount (the song sold 250,000 copies) the second story was that they paid for the right to use it... UPDATE - In regards to my FIRST COPYRIGHT JAM Marvin Gaye's family v Robin Thicke the courts awarded Marvin Gaye's Family 7.3 Million US - They basically said the song was ripped off.
