(TW: Suicide) Remember this 2007 hit? Back when Amy ruled? Sean, sampling Ben E. King? It was big. But as with Green's "Fuck You" to come, the Midwest scowled; it'd need a lyrical edit for the air -- from "suicidal" to "in denial." Why is treating gravity with levity, with pop music, irresistible? "96 Tears," "It's My Party" turn weeping into dance moves; "Summertime Sadness (Remix)" is clubbing for the clinical; "Back to Black" turns up the wrists of a 50s soul singer; "Pumped Up Kicks" launches the threats of a violent child (that his peers best put their pricey shoes to work) into Top 40 radio. Foster told CNN, "I wrote 'Pumped Up Kicks' when I began to read about the growing trend in teenage mental illness." He made it catchy, 'cause nothing exposes like juxtaposition. In Kingston's case, I'd use his lyrics against him: "I'm losin' my mind, and I don't think it's clever." But suicidality isn't just for Good Charlotte; maybe that's why I find this jam feckless but fascinating.
