Theme: Best of 2014 Severed Crossed Fingers repurposed the hopeful, joyous hook of "Birth in Reverse" to tell about clinging to hope and fumes. It's so deeply personal she recorded it in one take, crying at the end.

St. Vincent's new album is out today. Joy... I'm jamming the haunting closing number but needless to say, all 11 entries are worth it. Annie's transformation from the 'next Kate Bush', still ridden with all sorts of mannerisms from her Sufjan years, to fully-fledged artist is a fascinating trip, and far from over. Playing with genres while still unmistakeably herself, dressing up the harshest feelings in appealing attires, crafting pop jewels that would top the charts in some alternate bizarro world... - and that killer guitar! ... One of the musical figures of the time.
