John Davis was not being metaphorical when he wrote this song about his alcoholism. For me, though, it still makes a ton of sense even though I've never had a drink in my life. "I don't know what I've been trying to prove every time I get too fucked to move" could relate to a lot of things in my life that don't have shit to do with alcohol.
