Maybe things will be better in Chicago. (Not likely.) I notice I choose Tom Waits for special occasions, and I can't be the only one jamming this tune today. From his album about coming and going, staying and gettin' the hell outta there, here's the last song -- about leaving. Leaving a place, yes, but also leaving company. If your troubles are following you, chances are Sheila's one of 'em. It's a sad thing to cut people loose. 'Cause if you're anything like me, your nostalgia doesn't distinguish between the "good" and the "bad." I hated those days, but thinking back on them, I miss their singularity. I miss what they were, I miss their pain. Nostalgia is just that: historical infidelity -- a stylized impression of the past that somehow exults in what hurt. It's perverse. The more it stings the more deeply you want to dig around, reconstruct the fleeting expressions. Why? There's no purpose. So here's your last indulgence. Should old acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind.   5

Seasonally appropriate Tom Waits.
