SINGLE REVIEW: We Were Evergreen fit nicely into the sub-genre that I sometimes like to call 'smart-pop' (along with bands like Everything Everything, Hands, Django Django and Dutch Uncles). Smart-pop acts are recognisable for making tracks that don't quite "feel" like pop music, in the sense that they're obviously reaching for something more intellectual or abstruse, but still definitely carry that radio-friendly DNA (openly or otherwise). We Were Evergreen's newest tune, 'False Start', is a perfect example of everything I think this sub-genre stands for. It's loaded with strange, metaphorical lyrics, quirky, space-age synths and wobbly vocal harmonies, but at its core lies a strong hook, a steady rock beat, and some snazzy guitars. If We Were Evergreen can deliver an album full of tracks just as clever as this one, they might just become my favourite new act of 2014.
