Time Was by Wishbone Ash

21schizoid’s jam on 5 Jan ’14 and then once after that (See all)

“Yep, been in hiding. The whole Jam thang gets a bit overbearing at times. So advice on dealing with me is simple...just ignore & sometime I'll disappear for good...happens to us all, luvvies. What has drawn you here tonight, I hear no-one say. A wee internet sojourn, alerted me to the fact that this very night in 1972, my beloved Ash were playing Glasgow's (in)famous Green's Playhouse. Since I enjoy inhabiting the past, it behoves me to celebrate this fact, by sharing their opening number from that gig, with y'all. 60p a ticket got you in & the twin joy of the Average White Band in support, makes that price, the crime of the century. Two years later, just shy of my 15th birthday, I would see the boys in Green's makeover venue, the Apollo. It remains the only time I saw the band, but I caught them at their peak & with other bands of the time, I was similarly blessed with such great good fortune. So, indulge for 9 minutes, preferred beverage in hand & join me in misty-eyed reminiscence.”

I'm going retro.   1

I'm in nostalgic mode. Now this is a long track. However, I want you to set aside 10 minutes. A meagre 10 minutes. Sit down with your favourite beverage. Time machine yourself back 42 years and hear (or remind yourself) just how wonderful rock was, back in the day...and all this beautiful noise from 3 geetars and a set of drums (thwacked by the vastly underrated Steve Upton). On Friday 11th October 1974, for the princely sum of £1.50 (incl VAT) I and a now forgotten school chum, attended the famous old, gone now, but never forgotten, Glasgow Apollo, to see the Ash (I'm sitting here with the ticket stub). I was 9 days away from my 15th birthday. Supporting was Greenmantle, a two-piece acoustic from Glasgow. Sadly, I can't recall too much about the gig, but I do recall this song, from the Argus album. It's just magnificent, both in construction and execution. So, do we miss 70s rock? Answer... How many 14 year olds will be attending a gig with this calibre of music, tonight? Quite...   71

Rediscovered band from my childhood. Still sounds fantastic.

Opener of the 3rd album I ever owned. Still shivers my timbers.   2
