I can't stop listening to this album. Gorgeous song!

Great choice. And on a completely unrelated note; 'The Beautiful South - 'Song For Whoever', should it be 'whomever'?

How ya been, sweetness?

@Bukowski Asking The Grammar Queen of Scotland - a sensible decision.

@jonnyneale5 Brilliant name for her; do we need to courtesy?

@jonnyneale5 Can I wear your crown to the fancy dress party tonight?

6 years, 8 months ago

Bukowski

@jonnyneale5 Ooo, I can have heaps of fun with this. Ta.

@Bukowski @jonnyneale5 Hellooo! I'm fine, darlings; having to re-find my music mojo after enforced time away. I shall waste no time, then, in getting down to business: first, yes - you do need to curtsey. Second, 'whom' is only used in conjunction with a preposition, ie TO whom, OF whom, FOR whom etc. It's falling out of use, though, and mostly meant to signal a mock-formal tone. Third, my royal status ordains that I wear Jonny's crown. So hand it over.

Thanks, @jobo91!

Oh - @Bukowski - your actual 'whom' question - while technically it its 'whomever', you wouldn't use it in this context because of the point above: you would be losing the tone of spontaneity by introducing the formal element. So it's cool. Poetic licence and all that...

O HAI! #FridayElephantJam, is there anything better?

6 years, 8 months ago

Bukowski

@AlicejustMay Flippin' heck. The Grammar Queen Of Scotland has ordained. Although I'm none the wiser other than that all this grammar is all very well, it should be 'Song For Whomever' but from what I can gather there is an aesthetic aspect to all of this which means you can do whatever you like as long as it looks good and contains an element of "poetic licence"; this sis becoming phooey!

@AlicejustMay Jonny didn't tell me he has a crown; GIT! I could have borrowed that for....erm..leave it with me.

AlicejustMay

@Bukowski Ah well; you can't do whatever you like in every context, but you know what I mean. Not that it's always advisable to follow your instincts. One of the lyrics I hate most in the world was inflicted on us by Paul McCartney where he sings 'this world in which we live in' - a line that makes my toes curl. Sometimes it helps to know the rules in order to know when to throw the rulebook out.

@Bukowski Now - about that crown...

6 years, 8 months ago

Bukowski

@AlicejustMay Fair point and I do, in all seriousness agree with you. 'this world in which we live in' is a real teeth grinder as is Alanis Morissette and her 'ironic'.

6 years, 8 months ago

Bukowski

@AlicejustMay As I understand it you have only recently received the appellation The Grammar Queen Of Scotland so perhaps a new diadem for a new Queen; something in purple velvet perhaps. I cannot see Jonny giving you his; you know what he's like when it comes to his crown. So many double entendre opportunities here I've almost....oh, err, missus...

@Bukowski Don't get me started on her.

@Bukowski I know how much you love an innuendo. Whoops! That just slipped out. Ooh, I've done it again. Crikey.

Just thought of another one. Paul Simon singing: " I wish I was homeward bound" Shouldn't it be "were" instead because I believe "was" should be used in the context of actually DOING it instead of "wishing"...................God! I've confused myself now, Help!!

@Bukowski @AlicejustMay Oi! Leave my crown alone! It's the source of all my power. Be warned Bukowski, that Alice just may be the Grammar Queen of Scotland but she's also a bonafide, weapons-grade wenchcat. :0)

Clapton's "Lay Down Sally", The Police, “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic” – “Everything she do just turns me on.” *shudder*

Bukowski

@jonnyneale5 Oh, go one Big Jonny; let me stroke your crown, just for a little while. Alice has got quite a CV going there. Nice one.

@jonnyneale5 Incorrect Grammar in Songs: clenches fist until knuckles become white

6 years, 8 months ago

jonnyneale5

@Bukowski How about Play Me by Neil Diamond? "Song she sang to me, song she brang to me". Oh and a word to the wise if you try to touch my crown and I'll thrash you to an inch of your life with my sceptre.

6 years, 8 months ago

AlicejustMay

@decarter Yes, it's the subjunctive tense! Nicely observed. Though I can just about stomach that one. @jonnyneale5's examples make me feel faintly nauseous, however. Well done, Jonny. And be warned that if you wield your sceptre at me, this weapons-grade wenchcat WILL have you thrown in the bear pit.

thesunneversets

I'll tell you what makes me MAD, it's when lyrics use "you and I" at the end of a line for rhyming purposes, when it's in the grammatical accusative and should therefore be "you and me". Argh! *punches someone at random*

I'm checking out some jams while my toe nails (subtle corally orange) are drying. This is a perfect toe nail drying jam :)

@jonnyneale5 'thrashed within an inch of my life with a sceptre' you say? Oooo, yes please. What a way to go......what will you do with my final inch? I do tend to forgive The Jewish Elvis any grammatical errors, it's a thing we have.
