I've only just finished listening to your Mica Levi jam 5 minutes ago ( which was wonderful)..I can't keep up! I need a few more listens to this one. Great first impression though. .... btw,I think you missed my query on your last jam (best of 2014 list..) :-)
@debutch hello, friend! Picking up from your comment at jam-change-over-time, yes; an excellent top 10, I'd say. I must say I can't get into FKA Twigs at all, though - *must try harder*!
@debutch - @Bukowski also has a great list. I think I'm veering more towards electronica, funnily enough - two of my most-listened to albums last year (though not released last year) were Donato Dozzy Plays Bee Mask, and Benn Jordan's 'Pale Blue Dot'.
Others in the running (which are from 2014) include:
Andy Stott - Faith in Strangers
Daniel Lanois - Flesh and Machine
Some Truths - Some Friends I Lost To bedlam, Others I Abandoned There
Lucy - Churches Schools And Guns
I really like the 'Under the Skin' OST too, but for a while, when i first listened to it, I thought it owed maybe a bit too much to Komeda's OST for 'Rosemary's Baby' - then again, I think a lot of horror soundtracks do. Must try to see the film - any good?
@antonywaltjarv Ooh... I can see where you're coming from, but they feel very different to me. Wonder if I'd have made that connection if I'd heard Komeda first? I've never listened to his work though I've heard the name often enough - good cue for me to go and explore. Yes - the film is superb if you're in the zone, so to speak. I'd just read the book, which Glazer once described as trashy brilliance or similar, and that's exactly what the book was. The film, however, was far more abstract...
and didn't follow the same plotline as the book - which was good news. Scarlett Johannsen was stunning, and some of the scenes were just... well... out of this world. Glazer started out as a commercials director, and I recently saw some he's just done for Canon. It's obvious he only does it to fund his films now, I'd say.
ok convinced - I'll hunt it down from the tax dodgers. Komeda's has lots of different stuff, I suppose - like the faux-sweet nursery sound and the jazz, but it's just that rising 4 note string theme that Mica Levi uses - as soon as I heard it I thought of RB. Incidentally - did you see the film 'Berbarian Sound Studio' ? I just picked it up from Fopp on the strength of its OST - by the band Broadcast - v good. Horror OSTs have been my big find over the last few years - esp. the Italian ones
@antonywaltjarv Cool - no, I haven't. I like Broadcast, so I'll check that out too. Don't know if you saw my earlier comments above, but at risk of being a bore have a listen to Pale Blue Dot and Donato Dozzy if you get a chance. Shivery good.
oooh! - another good horror OST - 'Only Lovers Left Alive' - -Jim Jarmusch film - by Jozef van Wissem (lute player - seriously) and a band called SQURL.
Thanks, @Brownpants! I'm only just getting to know the album, and have Haunted Graffiti still to listen to. In fact, I didn't get as much listening done last year as I wanted to so I have a huge list I might have finally got to grips with by the end of 2015! I had a wonderful Christmas and New Year - did you and Naty? Did you manage to spend much time together? xxx
@AlicejustMay Glad to hear you had a great time over the festive season. Yes, me and Naty got to talk loads on Facetime although we also missed each other quite a bit too. We're working on making sure we spend next Christmas together here in England. All good though, we're very happy. :-) xxx
(Frantically scribbling down the list above for future reference!) ...Which is why I've searched for your jams so much in the past. You tend to lean very much towards the contemporary ( as does @melissapulo , also ) and I love that from both of you. ....Finger very much on the pulse! ...I would like to jam more like this but usually end up taking the lazy 'safe' options! Keep up the great work!
@gingerbeardman Who knows? The delay in the follow-up makes the Stone Roses 'difficult second album' tardiness seems efficiency itself in comparison...
Wow, love the song and video. I'm going to have to dig in both your and @debutch 's best of 2014 lists. I mentioned it before, but I spent the whole year mostly listening to albums from new artists I heard on my TIMJ feed on an almost daily basis, so the idea of ranking them is kind of overwhelming. If I had to pick a favorite though, it would be 'Tyranny' by Julian Casablancas + The Voidz, which is funny 'cause I never cared much for Casablancas' work before hearing it. Just a superb departure
@shiningsun2k I know - TIMJ is amazing for this, isn't it? And that's without even spending all the time I'd like here. If you like I can assemble my long-list for 2014 - but maybe that'd be a bit much?
@shiningsun2k@debutch - okay, here goes: In no particular order at the mo, my faves so far:
Under the Skin OST – Mica Levi
Losers – And So We Shall Never Part
Young Fathers - Dead
Beck – Morning Phase
Andy Stott – Faith in Strangers
St Vincent – St Vincent
Sleaford Mods – Divide and Exit
Lee Gamble – Koch
Angel Olsen – Burn Your Fire for No Witness
Lucy – Churches Schools and Guns
Hundred Waters – The Moon Rang Like a Bell
Daniel Lanois – Flesh & Machine
Breton – War Stories
Clark – Clark
ctd:
Grouper – Ruins
Jack Ladder & the Dreamlanders – Playmate
Lana Del Ray - Ultraviolence
Some Truths - Some Friends I Lost To Bedlam, Others I Abandoned There
Ones I'm still getting to know:
Flying Lotus – You're Dead
Actress – Ghettoville
Gazelle Twin - Unflesh
Future Islands - Singles
Answer Code Request
Falty DL – In the Wild
Chet Faker – Built on Glass
Jane Weaver – The silver Globe
Liars – Mess
Objekt – Flatland
Royksopp – The Inevitable End
Sun Kil Moon – Benji
Sylvan Esso – Sylvan Esso
Ariel Pink – Pom Pom
@antonywaltjarv Oh! Oh! Oh! Just remembered - best 'horror' soundtrack of all time - the OST to the original Wicker Man film! The creepy menace behind the kitchness!
@AlicejustMay yes I love that too. the chap who eventually put that out on his label - Johnny Trunk - has an OST radio show on a small London station - Resonance104.4 - you can listen to them as podcasts here...

I felt the same after numerous listens to FKA Twigs, then suddenly, they clicked ( or maybe, "twigged" with me) for some reason :-)

@antonywaltjarv Fab! Keep 'em coming. I've got loads to listen to at the mo, but soundtracks ALWAYS work their way to the top of my list...

I know @shiningsun2k hasn't had a chance to answer you yet but I would certainly like to see your long list, Alice ( when you have the time )

Yeah, lay it on me, please! I save lists like that and work through them over time, so I'd like that very much. :)
