@Avante They meant it. One of the most enduring marriages in music, as well as professional partnership. Les's understated guitar backing perks it up from behind, I think. Heavy echo throughout almost gives it a Spector feel, and the closely-miked double bass keeps it chugging along
Maker and player of some of the greatest guitars ever made, Mary Ford was his wife and they always sang together after they married in 1949. They used cardioid microphone's to create that relaxed 'proximity effect '. It was achieved by having the mouth less than six inches away from the mike, and gave a more relaxed sound. Very mellow indeed.
