Music has always been something I have mostly discovered, enjoyed and shared amongst groups of friends - a bit of a problem when it comes to bands, like The Velvets, which piss a lot of people off. After trying to "do Heroin" in front of assembled staff and pupils on the the stage of the school assembly hall I was adopted as a sort of pet by the some of older cool guys who had little musical soirees of their own to which I was invited.
It was at one of these that I was introduced to the joys of Clapton, Bruce and Baker and although this is the album that sees them veer away from their Blues and Jazz roots and create something wholly new - it was also the album - and the discussion around it - that led me into Blues and Jazz and back into Black musical history. There was a lot of discussion, I remember, about the different merits of the three musicians and whether this was REALLY BLUES or not!
This is how I heard of John Mayall and Fleetwood Mac and got into the Blues. Of course Disraeli Gears and The Power Trio format took music into a completely new direction that swiftly became Blues Rock and Heavy Metal. It was a John Mayall album - Bare Wires - which is very jazzy that got me into Jazz after the uncle of a member of our little cabal mentioned Charlie Parker and Thelonius Monk. In a second hand store I chanced upon very scratched copies of Monk's music and an old single by Bird!
@Axol i'd been thinking of doing a swans discography too (a song or two per album in chronological order), but that will be much more than 10 jams so i might shelf that one for later.
@moondog According to Wikipedia he died last year, sadly. Well worth reading the article. RIP Martin Sharp leading light of the sixties counterculture in London and Oz. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Sharp
@21schizoid the stories are from my memory but thanks to you for the concept, and thanks to @debutch for reminding me. I don't intend to keep this up for longer than the "Ten Albums that Shaped My Teenage World"
