@SheRa there are some comments I wish we could keep as a badge... yours would be one of them! Huahuahua, I can already visualize, us entering a room and the riff playing! ;)
@rock1 yeah, totally badass!!! the story behind the eye patch: "He was playing Wandsworth Town Hall and he was tuning the guitar up and snapped a string which hit him in the eye. It didn't actually do any damage. It was watering and all that so they put an eye patch on it. Then he went out and he decided after that to wear it all the time and changed the name of the band from Fred Heath and the Nutters to Johnny Kidd and the Pirates." Gotta luv this!!!
@philipnareike wow, it's fierce - never heard before!!! actually there are tons of versions to this song - I 1st came across this through Iggy Pop... there are some fantastic versions, but when I heard the original, I was "WOW!!!"
Thanks @lynn200 , i've watched a small documentary about him and the band; great music , way ahead of it's time and so shortlived... Happy you enjoyed!
@decarter ahhh but wait... there may not be a romantic story, but there's a tragic end to it, like a true to a rock'n'roll legend (and way before the most famous ones)... He never had another hit as big as Shakin' All Over, the band dissolved one year later. By 66 he finally start to reemerge, with a new band (he was already playing mostly R&B), but in that same year he died in a car crash, at 30yrs old. So, it may not that ravishing, but it surely is legendary!
@decarter oh no, please don't say I'm right as usual, this really gives me the creeps =P hahaha! I've just saved the 'legendary' bits, it's quite a story!
@paulgdaly well, I'm far from being someone with knowledge to affirm it, but I reckon that if it's not the 1st, UK rock'n'roll pretty much got real after this. From what I've researched while planning to jam this, I think this could be consider the 1st british original rock song to achive intl rock standards. It seems by that time the singers used to imitate the style of US rockers, whereas Johnny Kidd didn't, and it all happened before the "British Invasion" then maybe, historically, yes! :)
Thanks @christineb , I agree with you, I think Johnny Kidd had the kind of personality that would surely deliver some more great music... Glad you enjoyed it!
@21schizoid huahauh oh my, not sure if I understand, but no, he's the pirate, not the parrot! And if someone has to do a killing, it'd better be the pirate, not the android (myself) ;)

....like a cutlass dual or a fight involving a cat o' nine tails but a guitar string ? ..Huh!
BladeRunner
@DavidShepherd true! Turned out having so many versions later on, that I really guess they were ahead of their time

first great "English" rock'n'roll record.....????
BladeRunner

21schizoid
A bloomin' classic cut, for a wee young timer like you, Miss Jess!! Bravo... ;-)
mloup

BladeRunner
Thanks @christineb , I agree with you, I think Johnny Kidd had the kind of personality that would surely deliver some more great music... Glad you enjoyed it!
BladeRunner
@21schizoid thank you! I've listened to this almost by accident and got hooked! ;)
BladeRunner
@mloup thanks! I'm impressed on how many versions there are to this song!!!
21schizoid
@BladeRunner Given young Johnny's cohorts, I assume that would be Captain Hooked... ;-)
pez
Love.
BladeRunner
@21schizoid huahuahua!!! or I'd say to johnny himself to loose the eye patch ;)
BladeRunner
Thank you @pez ! Happy you enjoyed it
21schizoid
@BladeRunner Ah Jess, that's all very well, but then he has to put the parrot on eBay... ;-)
BladeRunner
@21schizoid he'd better do it!!! I'm ok with the knifes and swords, but no parrot!
21schizoid
@BladeRunner Och jess, just use them on the birdy...shish keparrot...problem solved... ;-)
BladeRunner
@21schizoid but I'm against animal cruelty!!! I think that something that Johnny will have to do it - after all HE is the pirate!
21schizoid
@BladeRunner ...hell's teeth, thought that read he was the parrot...should have gone to Specsavers... ;-)
BladeRunner
@21schizoid huahauh oh my, not sure if I understand, but no, he's the pirate, not the parrot! And if someone has to do a killing, it'd better be the pirate, not the android (myself) ;)
21schizoid
@BladeRunner Well Jess, i'm just delighted we resolved this little matter, with the minimum of fuss...ahem... ;-)
BladeRunner
@21schizoid yeah!!! Ahoy!
itskerryc
@BladeRunner Fifty years on and this is still being covered. A testament to the quality of the original song. It is a true classic.
BladeRunner
@itskerryc so agree with you!!! Not only ahead of it's time, but it's really that good! Glad you enjoyed it :)
teen
@BladeRunner mean look, yet mysterious..

rickydicky49
Mick Green on guitar, I guess?
seismonerd
love that wet-reverb guitar!
BladeRunner
@teen (sigh) hahaha ;) x
BladeRunner
@rickydicky49 Mick Green was part of the New Pirates on '62, on this recording was Joe Moretti. (but I only know this 'cause I've researched it ;) )
BladeRunner
@seismonerd me too! It was this guitar that caught my ear in the first place!!!
rickydicky49
Excellent research my man!
