Props go to @ndreasa who is the mastermind behind this data dump! Awesome stuff :D
At first glance though (and knowing what I know working on a new way of combining the data to make a "song graph" -- teased in http://thisismyjam.com/thatonesong -- those counts look way low to me though! Are those definitely for all songs by an artist, not just one?
These are each of the top 10 artists most jammed tracks; number of times the track was jammed; plays & likes:
1) Heroes; 13 times; 98/87
2) Karma Police; 8; 50/40
3) Blackbird; 6; 14/8
4) R U Mine; 20; 56/15
5) Young & Beautiful; 9; 66/34
6) Intergalactic; 10; 51/19
7) Lonely Boy; 21; 65/28
8) Don't Think Twice, It's Alright; 6; 20/11
9) Reflektor; 19; 96/76
10) There Is A Light That Never Goes Out; 9; 50/46
@flaneur That is the number of individual times each artist has been jammed, and I did double check so yes, if the data is accurate then the figures are, haha. :-)
This is really interesting! I'm super curious what you can extract from this dataset. Would be interesting to see how this data compares to, say, last.fm data dumps.
Regarding the numbers, I just tried a couple things
$ grep "david bowie" jams.csv | wc -l
7524
$ grep "karma police" jams.csv | wc -l
172
I don't know if you're a Linux person, but it looks like there are 7524 Bowie jams and Karma Police has been jammed 172 times. Could you have got a corrupt download of the data files?
Well there you go, I've made a schoolboy error (it's been a long day, forgive me) and left out The Rolling Stones, so you do in fact have the top 11 most jammed artists. They should be in 5th between Arctic Monkeys and Lana Del Ray (it's written down in front of me! I need a coffee...). Here are there figures:
Rolling Stones (117). Most jammed track - Gimme Shelter; 273/188
Apologies....
@ndreasa Hmmmm, that's quite a difference. Maybe I have got a corrupted file, I don't know. I'm just checking all those figures again and based on the info I downloaded it's right, but whether the info I have is right would seem to be a moot point....
@ndreasa I was slightly surprised at first glance, I'll be honest. They did seem a little low, but I had no reason not to trust the data so I went ahead.
I just downloaded a fresh copy from the blog post (http://thisismyjam.tumblr.com/post/74652076268/this-is-my-jam-data-dump) it's 173MB (not 155, that was an old version I had on my computer). Can you try pulling it down from there again? Gmail won't let me send attachments over 25MB.
I have a problem with numbers in general, but this is so cool!!! (and also responsible for at least 5 Bowie jams) Loved "thatonesong" as well!!! Thanks @Brownpants@flaneur@ndreasa
@ndreasa Right, I had no idea Excel had such limits, not a programme I've a great deal of experience with so I'm learning as I go. Could you reccomend something better (I'm on Windows)?
@Brownpants hahaha, it's ok! I really have a hard time figuring out numbers, so I just have fun with it! BUT if I had to bet,i'll still put my money on Bowie being no.1 ;)

One day I will close that parenthesis.

This might interest nobody but a sad academic geek like me, but if it does interest you at all I would love to know what you think... :-)

Wow... absolutely love this.

It's always possible there are bugs in the data set too, if you find any let us know and we'll refresh the data dump and apologise.
Brownpants
@ndreasa Ok, I really am concerned now that I don't have accurate data! Hmmm.
ndreasa
What size is your file? For me, jams.csv is 155MB.
ndreasa
What tool do you use to analyse it?
Brownpants
@ndreasa Any chance you could email me a fresh copy of the data dumps so I can check? :-)
Brownpants
@ndreasa Ok, so my jams.csv file is 176KB! Shit, that really is not right at all. :(
Brownpants
@ndreasa And I'm using Excel to analyse it.

I think Excel might have a limit on number of rows, I know older versions stopped at 65,536 rows. Not sure if those limits are still in place.
Brownpants
@ndreasa Of course, I'll have another go now...

@BladeRunner Hahaha, thanks but don't get too excited yet, it seems I may have been working with erroneous data!
