I only have Woke on a Whaleheart, which as an album I still haven't got into properly. But whenever I happen across a lone track by him, I've experienced that exquisite melancholia you mention. This has the same quality.
@AlicejustMay A number of his Smog albums are excellent -- along with 'Knock Knock' you can't go wrong with 'Dongs of Sevotion, 'Red Apple Falls, or 'Supper'.
@Bukowski - returning briefly to books, the late Crewes also wrote about the pretty relentless life he lived if you're interested in comparing the 'Southern Gothic' genre. Donald Ray Pollock's definitely one to watch too.
@robbfritz I'm glad. Please see previous comments for both Smog and Bill Callahan recommendations. 'Knock Knock', 'Dongs Of Sevotion', 'Supper', 'Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle' and 'Apocalypse' are my personal favourites.

thanks for this song. My friend is leaving the country for four months and it makes me quite sad. I needed sound like this.

I think I'll prefer 'Bish Bosch' in the long run. It has a certain humor lacking 'The Drift'.

@Bukowski @CellarDoor85 @7r0773r Thanks lots for the recommends - always useful when there's a wealth of material & you're not sure where to start.
