@abigail.deeks you are so right with this "Ella, Billie or Nina" statement! And the good message is: It does not matter, because at least Ella's version is stellar also in my ears and who cares for ranking at this level? Only have to confess, that Janis Joplins cover of this song in my ears is heavily overrated.
@abigail.deeks@Avante@Brownpants@azche24 Although this is my favourite version of this classic song, on the Ella, Billie or Nina debate I would take the Nina back catalogue onto my desert island.
I wasn't sure when she started to 'jazz it up', but completely one over when I realised she was taking the piss. Ella knew what it was like not to be rich and when the living was far from easy. Was she having a go at what was probably an entirely white and well-heeled audience, I wonder?
@AlicejustMay@lindatee@azche24@Brownpants@Avante@abigail.deeks The reason that this is my favourite version is although Billie has the soulful, heart wrenching, soaring and visceral quality Ella has a sense of insouciance, the notion that this only a song to comfort and distract us away from the realities of the situation, she knows that it provides a little sugar but the medicine still has to be taken and that perhaps after the song the weeping may begin.
@abigail.deeks@Avante@azche24@lindatee@AlicejustMay Much of the levity (especially in the last section) is an act of self deception, the song itself is delivered as a momentary respite from the social reality it attempts to gloss over, and she knows it.
@Bukowski I have to confess again: Her voice sounds just very, very sexy to me. When i heard her first, i was sorting a collection of very old vinyl discs. I heard "Ella & The Boys" and some performances from the early 40s then; she must have been 20 years old, but sounded like the ultimate singing lolita, so young, so naive, so perfect. Her voice changed a lot over the years, my admiration never did.

This is gorgeous and a fabulous song but it has to be Billie for me. My Dad would agree with you! We often have the Ella, Billie or Nina debate.

@UncannyUK Of course she was; she did the 'for those in the posh seats just rattle your jewellery' in a jazz stylee.

Some things in this world are over-sold. Ella is not one of them. She does deliver.

@Bukowski Beautifully put Paul. As I said yesterday this is 'gorgeous' and I didn't intend to create a 'Billie is best' campaign! X
