Hong Kong (Live) by Gorillaz feat. Zeng Zhen

“"Clint Eastwood" has the catchy hook and unforgettable rap verse. "Feel Good Inc." has the cynical outlook and punchy baseline. "Stylo" has Bobby Womack. Yet, out of all the Gorillaz songs ever created, "Hong Kong" sticks out for one reason. It is unlike anything Damon Albarn created with his time in the experimental band. The simple guitar providing tempo. The high piano keys offering striking warmth. The soft, dulcet, and haunting tones of the guzheng. Albarn himself, waxing lyrical insight on the ascent of China. Everything about this composition in perfect, and there is no way to say otherwise. It's one thing for Gorillaz to reinvent hip hop. It's quite another to build something so regal sounding, and yet so defining of the shadows that haunt the corners of metropolitan landscapes. "Hong Kong" is an underrated masterpiece, and I love it all the more for it.”
